Matrimonio all'Italiana part 1

The film spans twenty years of Italian history, from the Allied bombings of Naples to the early 1960s. Domenico Soriano, a rich Neapolitan pastry chef and unrepentant womanizer, has been linked to the former prostitute Filumena Marturano for more than twenty years. Having met her at the time of the Second World War during a bombing, after removing her from the brothel she was in, he had first placed her in an apartment he owned and then welcomed her into his home and that of her elderly mother as a lover. cohabitant and housekeeper.

In a continuous alternation of flashbacks on the past history of the protagonists and the present, the film shows the intricate relationship that binds Domenico to Filumena. Both seem to be in love with each other and both can't seem to do without each other in their lives. He doesn't let her miss anything, and even though he is inconsistent and often distant for long periods, he always comes back to her. However, for Domenico, Filomena remains a prostitute, a woman with whom he can have a quiet relationship, and nothing more.

Filumena for her part suffers from the constant humiliations that "don Mimì" (as she calls him as a sign of esteem and reverence) inflicts on her. Despite seeing her every request fulfilled in terms of money and comfort, she feels within herself that she lacks the esteem and respect of a man who in her heart loves her. "I'm a woman now", she will tell him when she reaches the age of marriage, a marriage which however Domenico will always deny her, at least until a certain moment....

Matrimonio all'Italiana part 2
